Meet the small businesses built on Bounce House in the Small Business Spotlight series. Sharon Huber, a vacation rental owner in Iowa, shares her story about her Huber Rental property, Lansing Iowa Loft

To begin, Sharon, tell us how you have gotten to where you are today - a small business owner.

10 years ago, I bought a property in Lansing, Iowa. It was an old church that I renovated to include multiple long term rental apartments, and the top loft is a short term vacation rental, great for families and groups who want to visit along the Mississippi.

Speak to the mission of Huber Rentals. What do you want people to achieve by working with you?

I would like my guests to experience a stay that exceeds their expectations. The loft was designed to feel cozy, homey and personalized. In the summer or winter, it's a great place to be, with enough space and seating for families to do what they want - be it play games, watch TV, read a book, or sit on the deck. The town of Lansing is beautiful and quaint, in the Driftless region of Northeast Iowa. There's tons of activities to enjoy in the nature - fishing, boating, hiking, bird watching - as well as restaurants, bars and cafes.

What has been the most rewarding and most challenging aspect to starting your business?

The most rewarding aspects are experiences with guests that share their enthusiasm with others about the Loft with others. A challenging aspect is getting potential guests to discover the Loft. Most rentals come through word of mouth, it's hard to for someone to just stumble upon the Lansing Loft.

How has COVID-19 affected business, and what are the ways in which you have made changes to your typical day to day?

Covid has impacted my bookings directly, less people are traveling and more people are worried about staying in a home that they don't know personally. Because of the uncertainty, I have to be more prepared for last minute cancellations, and adhere to Covid guidelines for cleaning.

For other people, hesitant to move forward with their own business ideas, what advice would you give them?

Don't take things personally, remember this is a business. You are not in it to be friends, you are in it to be successful.

In the next 5 years, where do you hope to see yourself and Huber Rentals?

I'd like to establish a returning customer base, increase bookings, and have a larger presence in the Lansing short term rental industry.
